Contraception: choosing what suits you
The best contraception is the one that fits your health, your plans for children, and your daily life. Dr. Brahma holds the Diploma of the Faculty of Family Planning (DFFP) from London, and can help you choose.
Options and how well they work
| Method | Typical-use effectiveness | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Hormone coil (Mirena) | Over 99% | 5 years or more |
| Copper-T (IUD) | Over 99% | 5–10 years |
| Implant | Over 99% | 3 years |
| Injection (DMPA, “Antara”) | About 96% | 3 months |
| Combined pill | About 91–93% | Daily |
| Condoms | About 85–87% | Each time; also protect from STIs |
| Sterilisation (tubal ligation / vasectomy) | Over 99% | Permanent |
Emergency contraception
The emergency pill (levonorgestrel) works best within 24 hours and up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. A Copper-T fitted within five days is the most effective emergency method. The emergency pill is not meant for regular use.
Choosing
- Want a baby in the next year or two: the pill, condoms or injection.
- Want a long gap: Copper-T, hormone coil or implant.
- Heavy or painful periods: the hormone coil often helps those too.
- Family complete: long-acting methods work as well as sterilisation, without surgery. Vasectomy is simpler and safer than female sterilisation.
Questions
Does the pill cause infertility?
